Half Marathon for Peace 2024 – The Toughest Run Yet

The Race: Physical Side Completed – Politics and Money Still a Ways to Go: Block MAGA, Build Progressive Power, Ceasefire Now, Support Convergence.

Finished in 2:34:34; First half: 1:17:17; Second Half: 1:17:17. Slower than last year, but faster than the two half-marathons I did during the height of the pandemic.

Only runner in the Male 75-79 Division so I was both first and last.

Friends and Family,

In the last 18 years I have run 13 marathons and 5 half marathons, raising $150,000 for various peace and justice organizations.

My half-marathon this year (June 29 in Goleta, California) to support Convergence Magazine is going to be the toughest one yet, politically, physically and financially.

On the challenging side, the political stakes this year are higher than ever – for Gaza and for the shape of US politics. Right now both the struggle for a ceasefire and the effort to block MAGA authoritarianism are uphill.

On the physical front, I expect to make it to the race finish line on June 29 before they shut it down. But after running 40 full marathons up to age 71, back issues, muscle pulls, and general aging have made a big dent in both the distance and pace of my running the last five years.

Financially, I hope to raise more money than the $10 to $15K that I have averaged the last few years. The Block and Build strategic perspective Convergence has been promoting has gained significant influence, and Convergence budget has grown accordingly. I know there are many immediate campaigns, electoral and otherwise, that need and deserve support. But Convergence is a key part of the infrastructure of a long-term, progressive power-building movement, and that kind of institution needs your support too.

So I am asking you to support Convergence and my run as generously as you can. You can make a one-time contribution or sign up as a regular monthly donor by going to Convergence’s website and hitting the donate button. :

All contributions to Convergence are tax-deductible. You can also donate by sending a check to Convergence at 490 Lake Park Ave. #10062. Oakland, CA 94610.

Thanks, Peace, and Hope,

Max
